What Does the Bible Say about Being Wealthy?

January 25th, 2009 · 3 Comments

I think many people believe that a person of wealth cannot also be a person of faith. Mathew 19:24 states that “It is easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into the kingdom of God”.   In other words, it is very difficult.

For a period in my life, I believed this. I actually felt guilty as times for making money and having nice things. After a lot of soul searching, praying and asking the right questions of the right people, I have a different viewpoint of wealth and how God actually looks at it.  I now believe that God is most interested in the condition our of heart. You will demonstrate the true condition of your heart by your stewardship and your giving.  Mathew 6:21 says, “where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.” Meaning whatever you make your highest priority in your life is proof of what is most important to you. Money should never be the most important thing, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.

In the Mathew 25 14-30 (The Parable of the Talents) – Jesus is telling a story of 3 men and their ablilty to turn a profit for their master. God wants us to be profitable and to take care of everything He has given us. The better job we do with this, the more blessings we will receive.

We also need to be givers. The Bible says that it’s better to give than to receive. If you’ve been on either side of that, I’d say it’s true. It always makes me feel better when I’m giving than when I’m receiving.  I beleive that giving is a heart and faith issue. If you understand that God owns everything and we are just managing what he gives us, it much easier to give to others. The Bible encourages us to give to the needy and the poor.

In conclusion, I beleive that being wealthy and being a person is very possible but your heart needs to be in the right place.

I am happy to see this post. This has been a concern of mine for some time and unfortunately have not discussed it with many people. I did research passages to seek a conclusion I felt peace with and I think you sum it up nicely on this post. Thanks for posting!

I am impressed with your website and as a believer I agree with you, Jesus was much more interested in the position of the heart than anything else in a persons life. Jesus spoke of wealth as privileged, but used the parable of the wealthy land owner who’s barns were not large enough to hold everything he owned and was going to tear down the barns and build bigger ones. Jesus called him foolish since he would lose his life that very night. Thank you for your Faith in your business.
